DATA VISUALIZATIONs: digital twins & dashboards
MILWAUKEE HISTORIC DIGITAL TWIN - 1910-1930
This digital twin allows for an interactive examination of Milwaukee’s built environment alongside multiple neighborhood geographies from the 1910s and 1920s. Both data panes are interactive and synced with the left modeling the built environment and the right displaying neighborhood geographies.
Note: The built environment is only partially digitized. As more structures from the Sanborn Maps are digitized, the twin will be updated.
historic milwaukee demographic & economic dashboard
Milwaukee experienced a period of tremendous change and growth from the late 19th Century into the early 20th. By 1920, the city had become a high-density, industrial hub for the country. This dashboard presents demographic and economic data from the U.S. Decennial Census from 1920 and 1930.
Evolution of Black Milwaukee, 1852-1970
The spatial profile of Black Milwaukee evolved from a dispersed community throughout multiple city neighborhoods into a series of small colonies and ultimately into a contained geography in the inner core. This process occurred over more than century, but was particularly pronounced beginning in the 1910s. The spatial concentration of the community was highly correlated to the racialization of Milwaukee’s housing submarkets.

As a beta test, this tool allows the user to compare the race/ethnicity of residents, zoning of blocks, and land uses of structures in the limited geographies of the lower Third Ward and upper Fifth Ward. The tool is meant to allow the user to compare the demographic, regulatory, and spatial characteristics of the area.
